The impact of COVID-19 has resulted in the suspension of all fencing activities from March 22. Since that time, the priority of Fencing South Australia has been to safeguard the health and well-being of our fencing community and to undertake its social responsibility to do everything it can to slow down the spread of COVID-19. We extend our gratitude to our fencing family for its understanding during this time.
You may have seen the Federal Government announcement last Friday evening where guidelines for a return to training for community sport developed by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). This document (The AIS Framework for Rebooting Sport in a COVID-19 Environment) can be found here.
Fencing SA participated in a seminar with Hon Corey Wingard, Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing for an update last Friday afternoon.
Current club closures remain in place and current restrictions prohibit a return of indoor sport.
Fencing SA is developing a return to sport framework specific to fencing activities and clubs within SA. The framework is designed to provide clubs with the structure for reactivating our sport in a safe and suitable manner. The document will be released to clubs early next week and will be followed up with an online meeting with each club’s committees.
Fencing SA will need to submit the framework to SA Health and the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing and the Australian Fencing Federation outlining our proposed return to fencing for approval.
It is imperative that Coaches are aware that under this framework it is mandatory to have current coaching accreditation completed and approved in the Australian Fencing Federation Coaching portal https://www.ausfencing.org/portal
Training will recommence as soon as practical under the Level B AIS recommendations once the framework has been approved. Resumption of training will be achieved in a staged approach in line with government recommendations:
- Return to train
- Return to competition.
It is anticipated that state government will continue to conduct fortnightly reviews and implement a gradual increase in the of number of people gathering.
To further aid the fight against COVID-19, Fencing SA supports the Australian Government’s COVIDSafe app and encourages all members of the fencing community to get behind this initiative. This will form part of our framework for return to sport. The app can be downloaded from the Apple App store and Google Play.
We will continue to provide updates to our community as we have more information to share.
